Green Climate Fund Readiness Program Summit Information Note
1.Climate Finance Background
Vanuatu is an archipelago of over 80 islands in the South Pacific, with an estimated population in 2016 of 270,402. As emphasized in Vanuatu’s National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA), Vanuatu is extremely vulnerable to climate change. It was one of the first countries to sign and ratify the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1993 and, with international support, has recently completed the development of a robust Vanuatu National Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction (CCDRR) policy. Given the country’s high susceptibility to the impacts of climate change, particular attention is paid to climate change adaptation.
In 2012, a National Advisory Board on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction (NAB)[1] was established to act as the supreme authority on Vanuatu’s climate change programmes; the official advisory board for all climate change matters and mitigating the risks to natural disasters. It is responsible for the overall management and coordination of climate finance, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The newly developed CCDRR Policy sets the policy framework for the implementation of the GCF Readiness and Preparatory Support Program, and outlines Vanuatu’s climate finance priorities including Implementing Entity accreditation with the Green Climate Fund.

The Ministry of Climate Change has been working hard the past few months to prepare for this year's climate talks. Now, with less than a month to go until the negotiations begin in Bonn, MOCC is inviting the public to attend a special COP23 Forum.
This Forum is an opportunity for people to hear about MOCC's work throughout 2017, to learn about the issues that will be negotiated at COP23, and to receive short updates on several key climate issues for Vanuatu. Most importantly, the Forum is a chance for the public to ask Vanuatu's national COP23 Delegation questions, and to share their own stories about living with and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

Starting in early 2016, VIA and local partners have reached over 1000 households in ten islands of Vanuatu with the first rollout of pay-as-you-go (payg) solar home lighting systems in the Pacific region. A world-first program of solar mill deployment has also been undertaken, with over 40 solar powered crop-processing machines now operating across Vanuatu, including coconut and cassava graters, corn shellers, flour grinders, kava mincers, refrigerator/freezers and new low-cost water pumps. These products have had real-time sensors added to them to show how TVL and Digicel’s mobile telephone infrastructure can help communicate system performance, opening up possibilities for payg community infrastructure and remote energy metering and billing as well as quantified impact monitoring. VIA will share plans on project expansion to 5000 households or more in the near term.
Come and join us and try some super smooth solar-grated simboro!!!!

Then open 8.30am until 4pm Monday to Friday

All VESS newsletter subscribers are most welcome to attend the opening event at 3pm next Monday or come along at any time when the exhibition is open.
Dugongs are one of the most iconic animals to be found in Vanuatu’s waters. But they are vulnerable to extinction. They rely entirely on their seagrass habitat to survive. Learn more about these majestic creatures and Vanuatu’s efforts to conserve them.
Did you know that seagrasses can hold more carbon than the same area of amazon rainforest? Seagrass meadows are important habitats for lots of marine life. Find out what creatures live there and how seagrasses help us to combat climate change.
There will be displays, activities, quizzes and games - something for everyone adults and kids.

The Australian Government in partnership with Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO) and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat are pleased to invite you to afour-day climate negotiations training workshop in Suva, Fiji. The course will focus on developing skills in diplomacy, including on drafting text for interventions, decisions and other written outcomes of the negotiating process, with the aim of strengthening the participants’ capacity to participate effectively in the negotiating process. The training will include experiential learning through mock negotiation exercises and provide a set of tools and materials that participants can utilize in upcoming UNFCCC meetings.
The course will also provide delegates with a foundation in the workings of the UNFCCC, including Marrakesh and Paris outcomes, the road to COP23, the link between other international processes and the intersection of gender and climate. Beyond the training, the workshop will be a valuable networking opportunity for women working on climate change in the Pacific.
