Fiji CABINET APPROVES ITAUKEI GLOSSARY OF CLIMATE CHANGE TERMS

A total of 59 terms have been translated into the vernacular.
Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Prime Minister and Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
The Prime Minister said that climate change is a global issue affecting most island countries and children need to be taught early to grasp its impact.
He said that recently, stakeholders met over a series of workshops to translate climate change terms into the vernacular.
This, he said, was necessary so that they can be fully understood by the people that affect them the most, the resource owners.
“Words such as acidification, afforestation, carbon, clean development mechanism, to name a few now have an iTaukei equivalent.”
The publication was compiled by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests, and was supported by SPC/GIZ.
