Vanuatu Climate Zone Quiz Competition 2014

Vanuatu Secondary School Students to Compete for the
2014 Climate Zone Championship

9 October 2014

Vanuatu’s Year 11 secondary school students are getting ready to demonstrate their climate change expertise in Vanuatu’s third annual Climate Zone Quiz Competition.  This year, every school, French and English, were invited to sit a written exam in September.  The highest ranked school from each province is now making its way to Port Vila to compete in the semi-final and final live rounds at the Television blong Vanuatu Studio from 13-17 October.  The timing of the competition coincides with National Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction Week.

The highest ranked schools competing are:

Arep School TORBA Province, Santo East School SANMA Province, Ranwadi School PENAMA Province, Rensari School MALAMPA Province, Malapoa College SHEFA Province, Lenakel Presbyterian College TAFEA Province

Climate Zone is styled as a televised educational “game show” wherein over 200 students in year 11 (ages 15-18) from all schools in all 6 provinces in Vanuatu compete to demonstrate their knowledge on the science, impacts and adaptation solutions to climate change.

The key objective of climate zone quiz promote climate change knowledge and skills among all government secondary schools, ni-Vanuatu youth, and the general public in an innovative, high-impact, fun and accessible format.

This year’s Vanuatu Climate Zone Quiz is being organized by the Vanuatu Ministry of Education, SPC-GIZ Climate Change, Oxfam, The German Embassy, UNDP, the Vanuatu National Advisory Board on Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction, Save the Children, the Department of Meteorology & Geohazards, Live and Learn, CARE, Red Cross Societies, Television blong Vanuatu, the Vanuatu Climate Action Network, the Australian Government, USAID, and the University of the South Pacific.

The live competition will be based on study materials sent to all schools that cover climate change topics of relevance to Vanuatu like agriculture, forestry, coastal erosion, gender, health and traditional knowledge. Student teams will be asked multiple choice, true false, short answer and even picture based questions to test their knowledge and skills.  The entire competition is bilingual and so students and the public who speak wither French or English will be able to learn from this activity.  All Climate Zone 2014 matches will rebroadcast to all viewers in Vanuatu and put onto DVD.

The public is welcome to come and support their favorite school team at the VBTC studios from 13-17 October and witness the crowning of the 2014 Climate Zone Champions!  If you cannot make it to the studios in Port Vila, this year Climate Zone organizers have partnered with Digicel Vanuatu to bring the public an SMS version of the quiz.  Watch your mobile phones for four SMS questions each day about climate change in Vanuatu; answer correctly and you could win great prizes!
