International Womens Day CC & Gender Press Release

On Saturday 9th March, supporters of women’s and gender issues gathered at the Chinese Club in Port Vila to celebrate International Women’s Day.  The event was organised by the Port Vila Chinese Women’s Association, the Vanuatu National Council of Women and the Vanuatu International Womens’ Group, who allowed the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD), the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and SPC-GIZ Climate Change Vanuatu to participate.

In celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day theme: “The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum”, a short presentation was made to the public emphasising the differences in gender vulnerability and the diversity of roles necessary for adapting to climate change.  A special table at the event displayed Gender and Climate Change related materials, activities and prizes to be won. Games and activities were a huge success with adults and particularly with children who participated.  It is now widely recognized that the consideration of gender issues in climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction is critical and that the Republic of Vanuatu is taking a leading advocacy role in the region.
