The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF). The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries including Vanuatu are encouraged to undertake local and national efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns. The Department of Forestry has been taking lead as part of climate change mitigation efforts since 2015. The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.

Dear Climate Activist!
Thank you for joining Vanuatu's nation-wide campaign on Friday 20 September. We had nearly 1000 individuals, businesses, civil society agencies, and government officials! Vanuatu is now the first country in all of Asia / Pacific to formally Declare a Climate Emergency! We are not alone, but are standing with millions of people around the world as part of the Fridays For Future, the Global Climate Strike and Extinction Rebellion movements.
International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction began in 1989, after a call by the United Nations General Assembly for a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. Held every 13 October, the day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face. The 2019 edition continues as part of the "Sendai Seven" campaign, centred on the seven targets of the Sendai Framework.

Global Climate Change Week (GCCWeek; http://globalclimatechangeweek.com/) aims to encourage academic communities – including academics, students, and non-academic staff at universities – to engage with each other, their communities, and policy makers on climate change actions and solutions.
In this, its fifth year GCCWeek will take place on October 14-20.
Weather extremes and reports of disasters make it clear: Climate change is dramatically picking up speed. At the same time there is a continuing increase in carbon dioxide concentration and other climate-damaging emissions. Scientists make it clear that there is an increasingly urgent need of acting now in order to stabilize our planet Earth in a habitable condition.

The consequences of climate change and disasters are experienced by all sectors of society, private and public. Despite strong interest and capacity, at present the private sector in Vanuatu tends to play an ad hoc role in climate change adaptation, greenhouse gas emission, disaster response and resilience building activities.

Since 2012 the NDMO has led the Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) working group. Together with our DRR partners we have been collaborating to standardize the efforts within the disaster risk management sector, especially at community level. This has provided a positive and efficient platform for collaboration between government, NGO’s and humanitarian organizations.
